WEBSTREAMING

Viewing programs via online video webstreaming

Home > Webstreaming

You can view many recent Rural Health Education Foundation programs free of charge via online video webstreaming.  (Please read our disclaimer notice.)

When do programs become available online?

The online version of each program is usually available within 24 to 48 hours of the first program broadcast.

What is webstreaming?

Webstreaming is an efficient process that enables video files to be viewed over the Internet, without the need for cumbersome video files to be downloaded onto your computer.

As the name suggests, webstreaming progressively "streams" the video file to your computer as you watch it, therefore you don't end up with a copy of the video file on your computer.  So you can view the video as often as you like but you can't keep it or copy it.

Webstreaming is totally different to videoconferencing.

How to view programs online

Follow these steps to view our programs via online webstreaming:

  • Go to the Foundation's Program index page.

  • Scroll down the table of programs to the program you wish to view.

  • If you have a dial-up Internet connection, click the "Lo" link in the "View Online" column.

  • If you have a broadband connection, click the "Hi" link in the "View Online" column.

  • (Alternatively, click "View online Lo" or "View online Hi" in the "Program options" box at the top right of the specific program's summary page [see example page].)

  • Windows Media Player will launch and the video file you selected will progressively download and begin to play on your screen.

  • Use the Windows Media Player controls to pause, stop, play or rewind the video, and adjust the picture size and sound volume.

Technical requirements

You'll need a recent version of the free Windows Media Player for PC (see picture below) or Apple Mac installed on your computer.  The "Readme" link for each version of the player on this page provides details of the system requirements (processor speed, RAM and disk space) for running Windows Media Player.

There is also a Windows Media Player FAQ page.

You'll also need a recent version of the free Internet Explorer or Netscape web browser.

The Foundation's webstreaming is currently not available for the Firefox web browser.

In order to hear the program soundtrack you'll need speakers or headphones connected to your PC.

Windows Media Player

To view the video full screen, click the small rectangle which has a diagonal arrow inside it directly above the elapsed time readout ("00.54" in the screen grab example above), near the bottom right corner of the player window. This will help make small graphics more legible.

You can also resize the screen by dragging the bottom right corner of the player window.

Impact on your ISP download allowance

For "Lo" bandwidth versions of our webstreamed programs, your ISP will debit your download account by around 380K for each minute of the program you watch, or around 34Mb for a 90 minute program.

"Hi" bandwidth versions incur a debit of around 1Mb for each minute, or around 90Mb for a 90 minute program.

Why webstreaming may not work for you

There are a variety of reasons why online webstreaming may not work for you, including:

  • Streaming video is blocked by your network administrator.

  • Streaming video is blocked by your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

  • Windows Media Player is not installed on your computer.

  • Your computer is not powerful enough to run Windows Media Player effectively.

  • Your are using the Safari browser (which won't work) on your Macintosh instead of Internet Explorer (which will work).

  • Your ISP account has insufficient download credit (see "Impact on your ISP download allowance" section above).
