Health professionals recognise that screening, vaccination and pro-active diagnosis and management of hepatitis B, prevent chronic liver disease and liver cancer.
Engaging with the community and ‘at risk’ populations is vital. Encouraging a better understanding of the disease process, the need for screening and the benefits of a vaccination program can make a difference in the incidence of long term complications with this disease.
Five video segments have been produced to showcase initiatives that are working toward breaking down the barriers in hepatitis B and its perception in the community.
Getting patients to talk about their personal journey is very difficult because patients are very reluctant to ‘go public’ about their disease due to the widely acknowledged perception of prejudice associated with this diagnosis. The cultural impact is also very relevant and vital to this program. Fortunately some people have agreed to be interviewed and to share their personal story.
