Australian Guidelines for the Treatment of Adults with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder - Case Studies

Case Study 1: Recent Trauma - John

John is a young man in his twenties recently involved in a motor vehicle accident and feeling moody and irritable and having trouble sleeping and coping with things at work and at home. The case study emphasises the important role of the GP in primary health care and the process of monitoring, supporting and deciding on referral if symptoms do not diminish.

Case Study 2: Suspected or diagnosed PTSD - Sarah

Sarah is a young woman who has been attending counselling with a range of stress and mental health related problems which could also be due to a traumatic experience. This case demonstrates how to raise the issue of past trauma and screen and assess for PTSD.

Case Study 3: PTSD with Comorbidity - Steven

Steven is a police officer who was recently assaulted and has also been exposed to multiple traumatic events over his policing career. He is depressed and drinking heavily and his wife is having trouble coping with his moods and behaviour. The psychologist works with both Steve and his wife and demonstrates the recommended approach with comorbid problems.
