“Outside The Square” – Western Australian General Practice Network State Forum
Maurie O’Connor, Senior Project Manager - Education, presented a paper at the Western Australian General Practice Network State Forum, held in Perth on 19th and 20th August. The Forum included a diverse program with presenters that challenged traditional thinking and looked ‘Outside the Square’.
His presentation was entitled “Linking future Mental Health Education and Service Provision” and was part of a Mental Health stream.

Australian and New Zealand Communications Association Conference
Don Perlgut, CEO of the Foundation, presented a paper entitled ”New Business Models for Australian Media Organisations” at the Australian and New Zealand Communications Association Conference, which was held at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane between 8th and 10th July 2009. The paper analysed funding models of a variety of information, news and educational media organisations, including the Rural Health Education Foundation as one of the key case studies.

9th WONCA Rural Health World 2009 Conference, Crete
Margaret Norington, Board Member of the Rural Health Education Foundation presented a paper at the 9th WONCA Rural Health World Conference in Crete titled Competent Teams – Addressing Health Inequalities. The paper outlined the unique continuing professional education (CPE) delivery of Rural Health Education Foundation programs to health professionals in rural and remote Australia, where there are significant health inequalities, particularly for Indigenous Australians.
She outlined the importance of appropriate, effective and accessible education and how it is critical to recruitment and retention of rural/remote practitioners, and ensuring high-quality, culturally sensitive care of Indigenous Australians. The Foundation’s Indigenous programs, emphasising capacity-building, community engagement, and prevention and promotion, provide a valuable contribution to addressing health inequalities and supporting life-long learning for health practitioners.

National Rural Health Alliance, May 2009
“Recovery from Trauma: What Works” was screened at the National Rural Health Alliance conference, Cairns, QLD on Tuesday 19th May. Amanda Little (Deputy CEO & Director of Education) introduced the program and how it fits with the Foundation’s program Australian Guidelines for Treatment of Adults with Acute Stress Disorder and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

WONCA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference
Amanda Little, Deputy CEO and Director of Education, presented two sessions at the WONCA Asia-Pacific Regional Conference which was combined with the RACGP Annual Scientific Convention in Melbourne held in October 2008.
She presented in the “Health Service/Primary Health Care in Challenging Environments” session “Over the seas and into the Bush” where she discussed the Foundation’s December 2007 program for International Medical Graduates entitled Over the Seas & Into the Bush: Overseas Trained Doctors in Rural Australia. Her second presentation titled “Talking the Talk: More than Just Rhetoric” in the “Primary Care in Challenging Environments” session outlined how important it is that a culturally responsible strategy in engaging Indigenous communities and health services is developed in order to assist in developing and filming CPD content.
