Addressing the growing problem of osteoporotic fractures
“60% of women and 30% of men over the age of 60 in Australia will suffer an osteoporotic fracture in their remaining lifetime,” says Rural Health Education Foundation CEO Don Perlgut. “And it’s predicted that these fractures will more than double by 2025, with hip fractures alone exceeding 32,000 cases a year.”
“This new program outlines the recommended preventive strategies for osteoporosis and fractures, and also discusses the assessment and interventions for osteoporosis after a fracture,” Mr Perlgut says. “After the June 22nd simulcast the program will also be available for health professionals free on DVD, along with the other three programs in our well-received Musculoskeletal Guideline Series, thanks to generous funding from the Department of Health and Ageing.”
Case study and an expert panel
Osteoporosis: Clinical Guideline features a filmed case study and a panel discussion chaired by Dr Geraldine Moses, a Consultant Clinical Pharmacist from Brisbane.
The panel of medical practitioners features Ms Cecily Barrack, a physiotherapist from the North Coast Area Health Service in NSW; Ms Judith Burrows, a pharmacist from the University of Queensland’s School of Pharmacy; Professor John Eisman, Director of the Bone Research Program at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in NSW; and Dr Dan Ewald, a General Practitioner from Lennox Head in NSW.
