Indigenous youth program now part of NSW high school curriculum

April 11, 2010

A Rural Health Education Foundation program on healthcare for Indigenous youth is being used by the NSW Board of Studies in its high school curriculum.

Strong and Deadly, a half-hour television program which is part of the Foundation’s “Strong” series on Indigenous children’s health, is now the main stimulus material for a unit of work in PDHPE and Aboriginal Studies for NSW high school students.

Students tackling the Strong and Deadly work unit are asked to analyse the significant factors that impact on the health and wellbeing of young people, particularly Indigenous young people, through an examination of three case studies of Indigenous community-based initiatives documented in the Foundation’s Strong and Deadly DVD.

Learning outcomes reinforced in classroom context

“We’re delighted that one of our programs is now available in an entirely new context - the high school classroom - where the program’s learning outcomes can be reinforced through the assessment activities which the students undertake after watching the DVD,” says Don Perlgut, CEO of the Rural Health Education Foundation. “Along with the recent national screenings of this program on SBS TV, inclusion in the NSW school curriculum is an important new avenue for spreading awareness of the health and wellbeing issues facing our Indigenous youth.”
