About the free T2DM programs
The T2DM Guideline Series focuses on the key practice points and goals for management of T2DM presented in the new NHMRC-endorsed Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Clinical Guidelines, to assist clinicians, health services and policy makers.
The four-part series consists of the following programs:
Primary Prevention, Case Detection and Diagnosis (program 913a) is a 60-minute program which discusses practice points and changes in goals for detection and prevention related to the Primary Prevention and Case Detection and Diagnosis guidelines.
Blood Glucose Control, Patient Education in Type 2 Diabetes (program 913b) is a 65-minute program which discusses practice points and changes in goals for management related to the Patient Education and Blood Glucose Control guidelines.
Diabetic Retinopathy, Chronic Kidney Disease (program 913c) is a 60-minute program which looks at two evidence-based guidelines that address co-morbidity in type 2 diabetes. It features a filmed case study of a 43-year-old man diagnosed with type 2 diabetes when he was 27, at 38 was diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy in his left eye, and by 41 was declared legally blind
Diabetes and Indigenous Australians (program 913d) is a 60-minute program which explores the question of how diabetes can be prevented in Indigenous communities, and the issues around diet, obesity, physical activity, poor living conditions and low socioeconomic status.
About type 2 diabetes
Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease globally and currently affects 246 million people worldwide. This is expected to rise to 380 million by 2025. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) accounts for 85% of this figure. In Australia, 275 people are diagnosed with T2DM daily. However, up to 60% of this disease is preventable by adopting a healthy diet and increasing physical activity.
