Trauma recovery program shortlisted for international award

August 21, 2009

A Rural Health Education Foundation program on trauma recovery is in contention to win a “FREDDIE” statuette at the 2009 International Health and Medical Media Awards.

The program, entitled Recovery from Trauma: What Works, has been selected as one of only three finalists in the Psychiatry category, with the winner to be announced after final judging on Friday September 18th.

Recovery from Trauma: What Works, which was produced in February 2009, is a 29-minute documentary aimed at people who have experienced a traumatic event, or are close to someone who has, and need help to cope with the experience.

Consistent program quality recognised

“We’re thrilled that Recovery from Trauma: What Works has been selected as one of the world’s best health and medical documentaries,” says Rural Health Education Foundation CEO Don Perlgut. “Coupled with the success of our Drinking for Two? program at last year’s FREDDIE awards, the finalist status of our trauma recovery program indicates we’re producing top quality educational content on a consistent basis.”

“We’re also proud that, for the second year running, a Foundation-produced program is the only non-American program to achieve finalist status in its category,” says Mr Perlgut. “International recognition like this underscores the value our programs can provide beyond our core stakeholder group of GPs and other health professionals working in rural and remote Australia.”

The other finalists in the Psychiatry category this year are US-produced programs about bipolar disorder and teen suicide prevention.

About the FREDDIE awards

Now in their 35th year, the International Health and Medical Media Awards, known as the FREDDIEs, are designed to encourage and celebrate excellence in health and medical documentaries, DVDs, websites and CD-ROMs from around the world.

Due to the difficult economic climate there will be no formal FREDDIE awards ceremony this year.

About the program

Recovery from Trauma: What Works was produced to help people who have experienced a traumatic event, or who are close to someone who has, to better understand the signs and symptoms they may be experiencing and assist them and their family to make more informed decisions about the most appropriate treatment and care.

The program includes information and advice on the most effective treatments for problems following trauma and the best way to help someone in the first few days and weeks after a traumatic event.

Recovery from Trauma: What Works, which forms part of the Foundation’s Posttraumatic Stress Disorder project, was produced in association with Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health, with funding from the Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing.
