SBS to re-screen Foetal Alcohol program on August 5

July 23, 2008

SBS television has selected a Rural Health Education Foundation program on Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder for an encore screening at 2.30pm on Tuesday 5 August.

Drinking for Two? is a 26-minute documentary which poses the question “Is it safe to drink at all while you’re pregnant?”

The August 5th broadcast will be the program’s third screening on SBS TV, after a successful debut in January and repeat in May this year. It first aired on the Foundation’s own satellite network in June 2007.

“We’re delighted that the broadcasts of Drinking for Two? proved popular enough for SBS to schedule a third run,” said Don Perlgut, CEO of the Rural Health Education Foundation. “Nationwide free-to-air television exposure provides a substantial boost to our educational program distribution and better enables the Foundation to fulfil its mission to improve health care in rural and remote Australia.”

About the program

Drinking for Two? profiles a number of people affected by Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, along with their families. Cases studies are used to illustrate the issues for children, adults and Indigenous communities in particular.

The program is presented by Julie McCrossin, former presenter of ABC Radio National’s Life Matters, and includes experts Professor Elizabeth Elliot (The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, NSW), Ms Lorian Hayes (National Indigenous Australian Foetal Alcohol Syndrome Education Network) and Dr Lara Wieland (Mulungu Aboriginal Corporation Medical Centre, QLD).

About Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder

Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) is a group of disorders that may occur if a woman chooses to drink during pregnancy. Babies can suffer life-long physical and intellectual disabilities as a result. The condition is incurable and the resulting damage is permanent, but the disorder is preventable.
