Foundation invites visitors to June 24 Canberra conference

May 16, 2008

The Rural Health Education Foundation will welcome visitors to its exhibition booth at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare conference in Canberra on Tuesday June 24.

Australia’s Health 2008, a one-day conference, takes place at Canberra’s National Convention Centre on Constitution Avenue.

“We invite everyone interested in health issues to visit our booth on June 24,” said Rural Health Education Foundation CEO Don Perlgut. “Many of our stakeholders are unaware that the Foundation’s nationwide activities are co-ordinated from Canberra, so we’re delighted with the opportunity to exhibit at a conference in our own backyard.”"

About the conference

The Foundation is a Silver sponsor of Australia’s Health 2008, which is the fifth event of its kind staged by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW).

The conference will provide insights into key issues facing the health of Australians and their health services, including cancer survival, mental health, and oral health priority areas.

The conference program will also include sessions covering:

  • Health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Socioeconomic status.
  • Co-morbidities between CVD, chronic kidney disease, diabetes and obesity.
  • Risk and prevention.

Foundation program contributors taking part

Four of the experts participating in the conference are contributors to Rural Health Education Foundation television programs.

  • Dr Norman Swan, who will facilitate the conference’s lunchtime debate, is the panel chair on nearly all Foundation programs.
  • The former Minister for Health Dr Neal Blewett, who will deliver the conference’s keynote address, introduced the Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Update program in January this year.
  • Dr Helen Zorbas, the Director of the National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC), who will co-present a conference session on Australia’s national cancer screening programs, was a panellist in the Foundation’s 2006 Breast Cancer program.
  • The Hon. Nicola Roxon MP, Minister for Health and Ageing, who will launch the Australia’s Health publication at the conference, recently introduced the Foundation’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Checks program.
