SBS TV to re-broadcast Rural Health Education Foundation programs in May
March 22, 2007Beginning Thursday 17 May, SBS Television will re-broadcast three Rural Health Education Foundation documentary programs on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples’ health issues.
The programs - Start Strong, Grow Strong and Keep Safe - were initially broadcast by SBS in November 2006.
“We’re delighted that the November broadcasts proved popular enough for SBS to schedule another run,” said Don Perlgut, CEO of the Rural Health Education Foundation. “National free-to-air television exposure broadens our educational program distribution substantially and further enables the Foundation to fulfil its mission to improve health care in rural and remote Australia.”
About the programs
The Start Strong (Thursday 17 May) and Grow Strong (Thursday 24 May) programs offer ideas for communities on what can work for them in improving maternal and infant care and early childhood development.
Start Strong and Grow Strong highlight successful community-based initiatives such as Jirnani Childcare Centre on Nguiu (Bathurst Island), Darwin’s Strong Women, Strong Babies Strong Culture program, the Mums and Babies Program, Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Health Service and others.
The Keep Safe program (Thursday 31 May) offers communities ideas on how to prevent injuries and showcases successful community-based initiatives such as the Hermannsburg (NT) Night Patrol, the Top End Women’s Legal Service (Darwin) and the Western Australian water safety initiative Watch the Kids.
All three 26-minute programs are presented by Karla Grant, the well-known face of SBS TV’s national Aboriginal current affairs program Living Black.
Essential viewing for midwives, nurses and Aboriginal health workers
Commenting on the Start Strong program, Pat Brodie, National President of the Australian College of Midwives, said “Such culturally sensitive and respectful educational resources are still all too rare in the field of maternal and child health. I believe this program to be an essential program for all midwives, nurses, Aboriginal health workers and medical staff.”
