Executives head to USA to present at WONCA World Rural Health Conference

July 19, 2006

Foundation CEO Don Perlgut and Head of Program Development Amanda Little will present at the 7th WONCA World Rural Health Conference in Seattle this September.

The conference, which runs from September 8th through 15th, is organised through the University of Washington School of Medicine’s Department of Family Medicine and WWAMI program, the American Academy of Family Physicians, and their State Academies.

The conference theme, Transforming Rural Practice through Education, is a perfect platform for the Foundation’s presentation.

The presenters will discuss three of the Foundation’s documentary-style television programs which look at best practice community-based models for addressing the deficiencies in health care for Aboriginal Australians.

The three documentary-style programs are:

  • Keep Safe (injury prevention in Aboriginal communities)
  • Start Strong (infant and maternal health)
  • Grow Strong (development in 1-5 year old children)

The programs have an emphasis on culture, capacity building, prevention and promotion and a validation of the Aboriginal concept of health and community.

The Foundation’s presentation will examine how these programs were researched, produced and disseminated, and the qualitative evaluation of the programs and their potential to influence the practice of rural and remote primary health care.
