Research uncovers sharp rise in childhood diabetes

September 5, 2005

Ahead of the Rural Health Education Foundation’s forthcoming broadcast on Type 1 Diabetes, new research has revealed a significant increase in childhood diabetes in NSW.

The study, produced by the Children’s Hospital at Westmead and published this week by The Medical Journal of Australia, found that insulin-dependent diabetes in NSW children has risen significantly since 1990.

The research by pediatric endocrinologist Maria Craig and her colleagues, which is available on the eMJA website (registration may be required), found that type 1 diabetes in NSW children under 15 rose an average 2.8 per cent a year between 1990 and 2002.

A useful summary of the report’s findings can be found in the 5 September 2005 online edition of the Sydney Morning Herald (registration may be required).
