Foundation staff to attend Alice Springs conference in March

January 24, 2005

The Rural Health Education Foundation will be well represented in Alice Springs from 8-14 March 2005 at the National Rural Health Alliance’s 8th national conference.

Free sample programs

The Foundation will have an exhibition stand and will be giving away a number of DVD, VHS video and CD-Rom samples of its programs.

Senior staff on hand for discussions

The Foundation will be represented in Alice Springs by Chairman Dr Brian Bowring (General Practitioner, George Town, Tasmania), Don Perlgut (Chief Executive Officer), Amanda Little (Program Manager) and Belinda Daniel (Operations Manager).

Rural health organisations and workers who will be in Alice Springs at the time are encouraged to come to the Foundation’s exhibition to discuss your professional development needs.

Satellite subsidy applications

The Foundation will also be accepting applications on the spot for subsidies to become an official Foundation satellite receiving site, enabling the viewing of live Foundation satellite broadcasts. (See more information about this subsidy program).

Display presentation

Don Perlgut and Amanda Little will be making a poster display presentation at the conference, on the topic Satellite Television for Rural Health Professionals: What future? This poster will examine the Australian and overseas models of providing professional development medical and health education programming, and analyse why some have been successful and others not.

The presentation will also discuss the future for television-based continuing professional development for rural health professionals, asking the questions:

  • What place does television have in an increasingly “wired” world of connectivity?
  • What role does television-based education have?
  • At what point do computers become like televisions and televisions become like computers, and what are the implications of these trends for rural health professional CPD?
  • Does the introduction of digital television services in Australia give additional opportunities to communicate messages direct to health consumers as well?
  • How can television distribution enhance CPD for professionals working in, with and for Indigenous communities in particular?
