Foundation to broadcast Hypertension program with National Heart Foundation of Australia

November 10, 2004

The Rural Health Education Foundation and the National Heart Foundation of Australia have joined forces to present an educational television program about Hypertension for rural and remote health professionals that will be presented as a live, interactive satellite broadcast on Wednesday 17 November 2004.

The program, Absolutely Hypertension: An Update on Assessment, Risk and Management, has been made possible through independent educational support provided by members of the Heart Foundation Pharmaceutical Roundtable.

About the program

A panel of experts will present a 90 minute discussion on assessing and managing raised blood pressure in patients. The session will be based on the Hypertension Management Guide for Doctors 2004, which was completed by the Heart Foundation in late 2003.

A Heart Foundation and Rural Health Education Foundation initiative, the broadcast aims to support rural and regional clinicians and provide a clear understanding of absolute risk and the importance of the level of blood pressure as a major determinant of an individual’s absolute risk for cardiovascular events.

Questions from health and medical professionals will be faxed or telephoned in to the panel as part of the broadcast.

In addition, the objectives for viewers are for them to be able to:

  • Conduct an appropriate diagnostic assessment for hypertension.
  • Develop a therapeutic plan for patients that balances reduction of blood pressure and absolute cardiovascular risk with a particular emphasis on the potential impact of lifestyle modifications.
  • Initiate short and long term follow-up of appropriate drug treatment therapy for patients with hypertension.
  • Implement reassessment and revision of treatment should initial drug treatment fail.

Presenters

The eminent panel of speakers includes:

  • Professor Andrew Tonkin (Panel Chair), Heart Foundation Chief Medical Officer.
  • Associate Professor Karen Duggan, Current Chair of the Heart Foundation National Blood Pressure and Vascular Disease Advisory Committee.
  • Dr Mark Nelson, GP committee member NBPVDAC.
  • Professor Ian Puddey, committee member NBPVDAC.
  • Dr Chris Mitchell, Rural General Practitioner & RACGP Rural Faculty Chair.
