Foundation to air unique program on Indigenous women’s medical issues
August 27, 2003The Rural Health Education Foundation will broadcast a unique program on medical issues relating to Indigenous women on Tuesday September 16 through its rural health satellite network.
“Overcoming Barriers to Screening for Cervical and Breast Cancer in Indigenous Women” is sponsored by the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners.
The program will be chaired by Dr. Norman Swan (presenter of the “Health Report” on ABC Radio National), and will feature an expert panel, including:
- Dr. Marilyn Kong, Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association Representative (NSW)
- Dr. Patricia Fagan, Senior Medical Advisor, Office for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health (Canberra)
- Dulcie Flower, Aboriginal Health Worker Educator, Aboriginal Medical Service Cooperative, Redfern NSW
- Dr. Margaret Davy, Director of Gynaecological Oncology Department, Royal Adelaide Hospital
Topics covered include:
- The increased relative mortality of cervical cancer and breast cancer amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women and the likely reasons.
- Evidence-based interventions to address these health issues, in particular General Practice-based initiatives aimed at improving access to culturally appropriate and effective early detection and management of cervical and breast cancer.
The program will be broadcast live on Tuesday 16th September at 8.00 pm EST, repeated at 8.00 pm that night in Western Australia, and repeated again on Friday September 19th at 12.30 pm EST.
